Pioneers of the Desktop Computer World, This May Make You Nostalgic
In the1970’s, the floppy disk made it’s mass introduction in the computer world with its cutting edge technology of data storage—from tape drives to small floppy disks. Who knew how fast the techno world would move on, past the floppy disk (born less than 30 years ago) and how quickly it would become a techno-retro relic.
As a designer, I am always inspired in how other artists reinvent “what’s old” as “new.” For me, the floppy disk reminds me of my college years in art school. It was a time when some of the most creative college students broke barriers with free-thinking creativity in technology (as with Apple® and IBM®) and into the new digital world of graphic design with Page Maker® and Adobe® desktop publishing. The introduction of the floppy disk was a big part of the design revolution—it allowed smaller design studios to share big ideas in literature, design, art, and technology digitally on something more affordable and small enough to be carried in the palm of your hand—to exchange big ideas that would changed the world.
